Why IRS?

When choosing a rehabilitation service, it is important to find a service that offers a high level of knowledge, expertise and quality you can trust. At IRS, we offer a professional service provided by highly skilled professionals that caters to all our clients’ needs. We are an experienced, approachable, and dynamic team of clinicians. Our team consists of specialist neurological occupational therapists, a specialist neuro clinical psychologist as well as an expert IT consultant.

We work with a diverse range of clients; however our specialism is the treatment of adults who have experienced a brain injury. We also treat individuals who have experienced spinal injuries, have MS, CVA, MND or other neurological conditions.

Our OT`s also have a wide range of expertise in supporting individual with arthritic conditions or orthopaedic injuries and amputations.

We provide occupational therapy, neurological occupational therapy including cognitive and upper limb rehabilitation as well as clinical neuro psychology rehabilitation. We also offer IT support, training and education to clients, families, carers and others involved in our client`s ongoing rehabilitation.
Our aim is always to help our clients optimise their independence and quality of life in all aspects of life, including personal and domestic care, return to driving, leisure and vocational activities.

    We provide an holistic assessment and will devise a treatment plan that is specific to each individual we support. Our team also offers training to support staff and carers. This is because we want to ensure each individual has the best standard of care and support.

    Angela Gordon

    Specialist Neurological Occupational Therapist – Grad. IPM, B.Sc. (Hons), M.Sc Occupational Therapy

    Angela has worked as an independent occupational therapist since 2008. She specialises in neurological rehabilitation, including supporting individuals who have experienced a stroke and/or traumatic or acquired brain injury. Her passion is in developing an individual’s cognitive and upper limb rehabilitation.

    Like the other members of our team, Angela aims to support our clients to gain independence and a good quality of life. Her clinical treatment skills are extensive, as well as her experience managing teams and offering professional training and education. She also specialises in providing comprehensive assessments of individuals with complex needs. Previously, Angela has worked in a rehabilitation and outpatient setting.     Angela is a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT), the specialist section for independent practice (SS-IP) and neurological practice (SS-NP). She is also a member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT) and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

    Birgit Richardson-Rathje

    Specialist Neurological Occupational Therapist – B.Sc. (Hons), AM inst LM, Postgrad certificate Neurological Rehabilitation, Consultant Case Manager

    Birgit qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1994 with a BSc (Hons) from St Andrew’s School of OT in Northampton. In 2007 she also completed her post-graduation certificate with Merit in Neurological Rehabilitation.

    Birgit enjoys engaging in continue professional development and attends training events, courses and conference on a regular basis.

    She was calibrated in AMPS March 2018.

    Birgit furthermore qualified as an inclusive dance instructor with Para Dance in April 2020.

    In her career spanning 26 years, Birgit has acquired a wide range of clinical, managerial, and training experience working in the NHS, educational, voluntary and private sectors. Her clinical experience ranges from long term rehabilitation (inpatient and outpatient settings) to working in the voluntary sector, community rehabilitation and working in acute care environments.

    Birgit is experienced in treating individuals with neurological conditions, mainly brain injury (traumatic and acquired), spinal injury but also medical and/or orthopaedic needs. Her expertise is in evaluating each individual’s needs and providing tailor made, goal focused and client centred treatment plans.

    Birgit established her independent practice in 1998 and set up IRS in 2005.

    Birgit has worked as a training consultant with Harrison Associated for many years, writing and delivering courses in neurological rehabilitation to postgrad OTs and OT assistants.

    Birgit has also been working as a Case Manager since 2010, holding a case load of adolescent and adult clients, who have sustained traumatic brain injuries, trauma and often have complex needs. She works with clients and solicitors within the litigation process as well as deputies from the Court of Protection or clients with trust funds or individual funding.

    Birgit is a member of British Association of OT (BAOT), Royal College of OT Specialist Section – Independent Private (RCOT- SS), British Association of Brain Injury Case Mangers (BABICM), Case Management Society UK (CSMUK). She is an associated member of the Institute of Leadership and Management (AMInstLM).

    Birgit has been an active member of the Royal College of OT Specialist Section Neurological Practice (RCOT – NP, formerly NANOT), working nationally on the Stroke Clinical Forum and locally taking the role of Chairperson for the Oxfordshire Regional NANOT group for a number of years.

    Birgit is also a member of Para Dance UK.

  • Declan

    Declan McNicholl

    Consultant Psychologist – BA MSc DClinPsych

    Declan works as an independent practitioner, providing services to people in the community and clinical settings. During his time in the NHS, he set up a clinical neuropsychology service in South Staffordshire. He went on to be the Head of Clinical Neuropsychology in Leicestershire in partnership with the NHS Trust. His responsibilities included developing clinical neuropsychology and associated psychological therapy and rehabilitation services. Across various locations in the UK.

    This includes services to individuals with a diverse range of neurological conditions, across a variety of settings, including in their own homes, outpatient facilities, and hospital wards. As Head of Clinical Neuropsychology, he was responsible for the management of an expert team of psychologists.

    He was a member of the Leicester University Clinical Psychology Training Course Committee. He remains an honorary lecturer and contributes to the Neuropsychology component of training. He is a supervisor for the division of neuropsychology’s post-qualification training, supervising many successful candidates. He is also a trained and qualified psychotherapist in personal construct psychotherapy.

  • Bill Young

    IT Consultant

    Bill has over 20 years of experience in the IT industry, including working with some of the largest global companies and financial institutions. Over his career, he has developed a diverse range of skills including helping individuals to work with IT, as well as managing large teams in both the UK and abroad.

    Bill has extensive knowledge of multiple operating systems, such as MAC, Wintel (PC), IOS, and Android.

    Using a hands-on approach, Bill aims to make technology accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of age or ability. He enjoys the challenge of analysing problems and identifying ways for our clients to overcome their obstacles.

    One of Bill’s main strengths is his communication skills. He is highly motivated across our various working environments. Before his career as an expert IT technician, Bill spent over 15 years as a Motor Vehicle Technician, as well as 2 years of experience as an Auto Electrician. One of his passions is home automation.

    As part of his role, he is always looking for innovative ways to utilise his interests, applying his knowledge and skills in IT to facilitate our clients’ independence and quality of life. Bill also has knowledge and experience in teaching and coaching both dance and scuba diving.
